Description:
Lyon: A. Gryphe, 1581. 18th-century blind-ruled calf (c. 1740, rubbed), spine and red morocco label gilt, red edges, green silk marker. His literary innovations and felicitous high style earned him the sobriquet "the Christian Virgil". He placed the pastoral genre at the center of contemporary literature, used secular imagery for sacred subjects, gave reign to voluptuous tenderness in "The Kiss" and invented the theme of "Arcadia". In good condition (a few tiny marginal worm trails), two canceled manuscript title inscriptions. ¶Oberlé, Amoenitates poeticae latinae modernae 217; Ellinger, Geschichte der neulateinischen Literatur I: 59-62 (& passim in vols. 2-3); Gültlingen, Bibliographie des livres imprimés à Lyon au 16e siècle XIV: 180,201.

Description:
[Venice: Jacobus de Fivizano (or Fivizzano)], 1477. 18th-century marbled calf (rubbed, joints slightly cracked), gilt spine and morocco label, blue and yellow endleaves. First Edition, containing "THE FIRST ORIGINAL MEDIEVAL CONTRIBUTION TO PHYSIOGNOMY" (Glick et al.). Composed between 1209 and 1226 at the court of Frederick II, the first of the two primary texts explores human generation - anatomy, physiology, astrology, sexual behavior, conception and the health of the fetus. This influenced Hill's Contemplation of Mankinde (1571, etc.) and Aristotle's Masterpiece. The second work, the Physiognomy, goes head to toe interpreting a person's character, vices and virtues from their features. It was translated into Spanish, Italian, French, German and Polish. The three short tracts that follow treat urology, dreams and the differences between animal genera and species, a subject Michael mastered while translating zoological works by Averroës, Aristotle and ibn Sina. A good copy, four pages with…

Paris: [Le Blanc for] F.-L. Regnault-Delandine, 1810. Contemporary drab paper wrappers (spine repaired), printed spine label, uncut. FIVE GENERATIONS OF PAINTERS, ENGRAVERS AND PRINT PUBLISHERS BUILT THIS COLLECTION - Israël Henriet (c. 1590-1661), Israël Silvestre (1621-91), Charles-François Silvestre (1667-1741), Nicolas-Charles Silvestre (1699-1767) and Jacques-Augustin Silvestre (1719-1809). Paintings and drawings first (673 lots), then prints (653) follow. Many come directly from the artists. The intaglio entries often note the state of the impressions. Described in thirty pages, lot 792 (Portraits) is an intimidating collection in itself: 345 individual sheets by or after Van Dyk representing sixty-two artists. With a preliminary life of the consignor, essays on national schools and an index, the catalog also serves as a reference book. Both the Order of Sale and the printed price list (each 16p.) are bound in. In good condition, bookplate and embossed title stamp of art historian Baron…
