Description:
Antuerpiæ [Antwerp]: Apud Jacobum Meursium, 1652. 3 vols. bound as 1, folio, pp. [xx], 488, 392, 396, [62]. Contemporary panelled pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, spine divided by raised bands, edges red. Worming throughout, almost all small holes, many touching text but with no loss of sense, some scattered browning and foxing, running marginal dampmark to lower corner. Boards wormholed and rather soiled, leather damage to head of spine, clasps and corner pieces sometime removed and leather repaired. Contemporary ink ownership inscription of Michaelsberg Abbey, Siegberg, to title-page. The most celebrated work of the Spanish Jesuit canon lawyer Thomas Sanchez (1550-1610), the first volume of which appeared in 1602, the second and third volumes being published the following year. Its casuist treatments of aspects of matrimony were so comprehensive that it attracted some critical opprobrium from within the church, with the third volume appearing on some iterations of the Index Librorum… Read More

Description:
Glasguae [Glasgow]: In Aedibus Roberti Urie, 1749. 8vo, pp. iv, 250. Contemporary French red morocco, boards bordered with a triple gilt rule, spine divided by triple gilt rules, citron morocco label, flower tools in other compartments, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Paper age-toned, occasional spotting. Binding a little rubbed, spine very slightly sunned, short crack to foot of rear joint. The only printing of Sallust in Latin by Robert Urie, the Glasgow printer whose paper, types, and press-work competed with that of the Foulis Press, though he relatively rarely printed Greek or Latin texts like this one in the original. His work even had an international reach, judging by this copy, which was clearly bound in France very soon after publication. This is nonetheless a scarce book, recorded by ESTC in only 6 UK locations (and just two of those in Scotland: Aberdeen & NLS), plus 5 US holdings and one in Munich. ESTC T93522.

Description:
Glocester [Gloucester]: Printed by R. Raikes, 1789. 8vo, pp. xxvi, [3]-226, [2]. Contemporary sheep, unlettered spine divided by raised bands. Toned, some spotting. Boards scratched, joints and corners repaired, front flyleaf excised. Various ownership inscriptions of Samuel Swan, one amended to be a gift inscription to George Swan (Nov. 6 1841). A scarce provincial printing of this school edition of Sallust, originally published in 1734. The editor and translator John Clarke (1687-1734) was master of Hull Grammar School, and a pioneering advocate of language learning without rote memorisation and with the use of translations (for which he was attacked by traditionalists, including Ruddiman). This edition was printed by Clarke’s wife’s brother’s son, Richard Raikes (1736-1811), also an educationalist with an interest in Sunday schools. ESTC locates a handful of copies of this edition, the only UK location being the BL, plus McMaster, UPenn, William and Mary, and… Read More

Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne and Co., 1816. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [iv], 468. Modern quarter green morocco, green cloth boards, black morocco label, marbled edges. Gatherings O and Y-2G a little toned as usual, marginal wormtrails to last 100 pages. The press figures in this copy identify it as Todd and Bowden’s second state, occasioned by the decision to increase the print run from 3000 to 6000 copies. They also note that gatherings O and Y-2G ‘are generally browned’; the pages here are lighter than that although noticeably different in hue. Todd & Bowden 89Aa.

Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne and Co. for Archibald Constable and Company [et al.], 1815. 8vo, [viii], 443, [1]. Near-contemporary navy calf, spine divided by raised bands tooled in gilt, two compartments lettered in gilt, the others tooled in gilt and blind, boards elaborately decorated with a series of blind patterned frames enclosing a central panel scalloped in blind, the whole bordered with gilt rules and corner pieces, marbled edges and endpapers, blue silk bookmark ribbon. A little light spotting. Spine slightly faded and rubbed. Ink gift inscription signed ‘William Henniker 1829’ to front flyleaf. A handsome example of the ‘fourth edition’, in fact the third, because the previous two were separate issues of the same printing, as per Todd & Bowden. Contemporary straight-grained black morocco, boards bordered with a combination of blind and gilt rolls, spine divided by raised bands, compartments elaborately tooled in gilt, all edges gilt. Some foxing and toning to plates, with a little offsetting. Extremities a little rubbed, with some wear to spine ends. Engraved armorial bookplate of Sir James Buller to front pastedowns. A mixed issue of the first printings of The Border Antiquities, which was noted by Scott himself to be a ‘foolishly conducted publication’ that ‘must be given up’. The bibliography of these volumes is complex: this example is at least partly from the first edition, with watermarks of 1809 and 1815 intermixed with 1821 and 1822. London: Printed for James Cawthorn, 1814. FIRST BRITISH EDITION, 8vo, pp. xvi, 222. 19th-century half green calf, green pebbled boards, spine divided by raised bands between double blind rules, red morocco label, top edge gilt. Some spotting to endpapers, spine slightly sunned, a little rubbed to extremities. Binder’s ticket of James H. Jackson, manufacturing stationer of Perth, to pastedown. Despite the title-page’s claims this is the first British edition of an American parody of Scott’s Lay of The Last Minstrel, satirising British naval conduct in the war of 1812, first published in America in 1813. Scott called it ‘a piece of tolerably dull Trans-Atlantic wit’ but regarded it ‘the highest compliment I ever received, since it blends me with the Naval reputation of my country’ (Todd & Bowden).
