Description:
James Reaney (1926-2008) was a Canadian poet and playwright. Emerging onto the scene in 1949 with his book of poetry entitled The Red Heart, Reaney would go on to challenge the expectations set by his first foray into poetry by producing innovative and unexpected works. In addition to his poetry, he was also a successful teacher, as well as a lyricist, musician, and painter. In his poetry he particularly focused on life in rural areas and small communities.
This collection edited by Germaine Warkentin was the first significant collection of Reaney's poetry. It is divided into the following sections: I. Poems 1945-49; II. The Red Heart; III. Poems 1951-60; IV. A Suit of Nettles; V. Poems 1960-65; VI. Twelve Letters to a Small Town; VII. The Dance of Death At London, Ontario; VIII. Two Chapters from an Emblem Book; IX. Some Dramatic Verse 1953-71.
This volume is in near fine condition, however it does not have its dust jacket.

His experiences growing up in New Brunswick were the primary source of inspiration for the short stores found in Earth's Enigma (1896), which recount various aspects of the natural world and the different ways in which humanity engages with them.
This edition is in Fair condition. There is some significant discolouration to the boards and spine, and the lettering on the spine is very faded. The front and back hinges are cracked, however the pages are all present and the binding appears to be secure. The tops of the pages are gilded and this gilding is in excellent condition. There are signatures from a previous owner both on the title page, as well as the front flyleaf, which in and of themselves are historically interesting, reflecting the travels of the original owner from Windsor, Nova Scotia in 1898 to Paris, France in 1900. There are also… Read More
