Description:
SIGNED Americans on EverestBy James Ramsey Ullman True first edition of the official story of the first ascent by Americans of Mt. Everest in 1963. The story is the stuff of legends: American Jim Whittaker and Sherpa Nawang Gombu climbed the south ridge. But instead of packing up and heading home, the team crafted a bold plan to ascend the untried West Ridge to the summit. Two climbers, Willi Unsoeld and Tom Hornbein made the climb and were met at the summit by Barry Bishop and Lute Jerstad. The four men were forced to spend a tough night near 28,000 feet- the highest bivouac ever at the time. The book has dozens of photographs from the expedition, and includes the original dust jacket. Condition- the book is near fine, the dj has small chips at the top and bottom of the spine. It is the true first edition (no the small circular imprint on the lower inside portion of the rear board). The book is signed by Jim Whittaker, the first American to climb Mt. Everest.
