Farmington: The Knowlton & McLeary Co, 1907. Second edition. 146 pp. Very good condition with light wear and minor light damp stains to the edges of the covers. Not a particularly rare Shaker title but this copy has a good inscription reading, "To dear Sr. Laura Beale with many loving thoughts from your gospel Sister Ada S. Cummings. 6.8.13." Ada Cummings (1862-1926) Was a Sabbathday Lake sister who was a schoolteacher, fan maker, Office Sister (see the Shaker Image, 1994). Laura Beal was a Shaker at Shirley, Harvard, and Mt. Lebanon. She left the Shakers in 1923 and spent her last years back in the Harvard area. One of the few books that we have had that was used in the Harvard community. Ericson, 5237.

New York: National Police Gazette office, 1880. 72, [8] pp. Fair condition with wraps attached with tape and flyleaf torn. Likely the first edition of this scarce account of the underworld of New York. Good content on crime and vice.

Columbus: F.J. Heer, 1907. 415 pp. Very good with names in pencil on the rear fly leaf. Surprising scarce with no copies currently for sale online. Inscribed to Elbert Hubbard in 1908 on the front flyleaf. This work gathers the various articles written by MacLean on the Shakers in one volume. MacLean salvaged a startling amount of Shaker material and even issued rare book catalogs to promote institutional collecting of Shaker material.

London: John Ollivier, 1848. Bound in Later cloth Maconochie was a Scottish naval officer and prison reformer who was appointed governor of the small Australian Island of Norfolk which was used at the time to house prisoners Later he returned to England and authored a book on prison reform In this piece he describes his belief that emigrants needed to be prepared to move to the colonies and in the second part of the piece he offers specific advice 24 pp pp.

Has a plain front wrap but lacking rare wrap. Text soiled and foxed. Fagging involved upper classmen harassing underclassmen in British Schools. In this case Malet's brother was beaten and expelled for not following the rules of fagging.

Morocco labels with raised bands on the spine, gilt tooling used on all six spine compartments with publication date tooled onto the bottom of the spine as well. End papers are also marbled. Slight rubbing on the hinges. Minor scuffing to the front board on Volume III. Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was a popular sociologist, traveler, philosopher and feminist. Martineau, known widely for her views on abolition and observations on societal issues, is often considered the first female sociologist. From 1834-36 Martineau travelled to America and observed American political and social institutions, which came as a result of the family textile business which had since failed. Includes a photo frontspiece by the author and a few illustrations by Ralph Mocine. Original brown paper-covered boards, title printed in re on upper cover. Very good. One of 1000 copies numbered and signed by the author with an added inscription by her on the flyleaf. Matthews (b.1866) was a prolific writer of short stories. The stories concern the Sonoratown which was the first barrio in Los Angeles. Matthew was a reformer and worked actively with southern California immigrant communities.

Albany: E. and E. Hosford, 1808. 119, [1], [3]-23, [1] pp. Ericson: 5318. A very good copy with an old bookseller's description pasted on the front free end paper and remnants of labels on the rear interior board and rear free endpaper. The first edition of the Kentucky Revival was published in 1807 and two editions were published in 1808 in Albany and Pittsfield. McNemar was one of the fathers of Shakerism in the west. He describes the gathering of hundreds of people to the Shaker faith during the Kentucky Revival.

Albany: Public Libraries Division, University of the State of New York, 1895. 16 pp. In good condition with a Western Reserve Historical Society Stamp on the front cover. Lightly soiled. This small pamphlet provides information and rules on obtaining a travelling lending library of 50 books on economics for use at public libraries, clubs, or by groups of interested citizens. Apparently, at least 330 libraries on various topics were available.

Paris: Booster Publications, 1938. Uncut copy and in very good condition This copy is not signed by Miller and does not have the manuscript copyright information found in most examples 64 pp pp.

Cloth binding lightly worn. Copy number 603 of 842 signed copies. Nicely illustrated by Ernest Shepard.

Napoli: Nella Stampa di TarquinioLongo, 1617. Worn vellum binding. 208 pp. Lacking the front fly leaf and folding map of the region. Some foxing and light stains. A scarce guide book to the region of Naples Italy with with lovely and sometimes odd prints.

1869. 8 1/2"x 5 1/2". Backed by an album page. Moscheles was born in Bohemia but spent most of his life in Leipzig and London.

Columbia: [South Carolina College?], 1860. Broadside. Fair condition. 7 3/4" x 9 1/2". Fair condition. Trimmed with loss to the edges and likely removed from a scrapbook with glue residue on the back. The two poems are pro-states rights and foreshadow South Carolina's secession from the Union later in the year. A manuscript not indicates A.B. Longstreet lawyer, minister, a staunch supporter of slavery, and friend of Calhoun gave the prayer. Alexander Haskell was one of the speakers and went on to be a Confederate General and Rivers was a professor of Greek Literature at the college. Unrecorded.
