Description:
Tom Leonard was one of this country's outstanding photographers of industrial and architectural subjects. His studio was on New York's West 56th Street but most of his photographic activity took place in the outdoors on location.
Tom Leonard saw his subjects in terms of mass and line, light and shade. These were the important components to him and their inter-relationship determined the outcome of his photographs. Leonard had an artist's eye and seldom found it necessary to crop the finished print at all. So careful was his original composition that the bottom edge of the ground glass in his 5X7 inch Deardorf view camera was slightly masked to match exactly the final print proportions he preferred. Leonard's versatility with this somewhat cumbersome camera was surprising. Judging from his photographs' depth of focus and variety of subjects, one would sooner imagine he used a Rolleiflex 2 ¼ inch camera that so many professionals of his day used.
