Description:
1921. JESPERS, Oscar. Bezette Stad. By Paul van Ostayen. [152] pp., illustrated with woodcuts by Oscar Jespers. 4to, 285 x 220 mm., bound in original illustrated wrappers, in a new cloth box. Antwerp: Uitgave van het Sienjaal, 1921. Belgian avant-garde bookmaking at its best. The innovative use of typography, combined with dramatic woodcuts, make this one of the more "forward-looking" books produced in the twenties. Oscar Jespers (1887-1970), Belgian sculptor in the Constructivist and Expressionist movements, was part of a group of artists and writers in Antwerp who gathered around the poet Paul van Ostayen, a Belgian dandy whose poetry and writings were greatly influenced by the Expressionist and Dadaist schools. Some minor wear to the wrappers, overall in unusually fine condition. One of 500 copies on Registre paper, of a total edition of 540. This copy is unsigned and unnumbered. 1914. "A PROSE-POEM AND A MASTERPIECE" JIMÉNEZ, Juan Ramon. Platero y yo, elegia andaluza... [3]-142 pp. (plus advertisement leaf). Illustrated throughout in colour by Fernando Marco. 8vo., 169 x 100 mm, bound in publisher's tan cloth covered stamped boards, in a new purple cloth folding box. Madrid: Ediciones de "La Lectura," 1914. First Edition of Jimenez's most famous book, beautifully illustrated by Fernando Marco. Published by a small Spanish press during World War I (on 12 December 1914) it has become, for obvious reasons, very rare. This work was chosen as one of the "Books of the Century" by the New York Public Library. The compilers of the exhibition catalogue pronounce: "This book graces childhood homes in Spanish-speaking households throughout the world. A prose-poem and a masterpiece, it was an early success of Juan Ramon Jimenez, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1956. The book chronicles the wanderings… Read More

Description:
1942. SUGIHARA, Jiro (editor). Dai Toa kensetsu gaho: Ajia no mamori, Teikoku Kaigun. 60 pp., iIllustrated throughout with photomontages. Folio, 420 x 295 mm., bound in original illustrated wrappers. Tokyo: Nihon Denpo Tsushinsha Shuppanbu, 1942. This is the Japanese language edition of the great propaganda magazine Front, which appeared in some 15 different languages, and is clearly modeled on USSR in Construction. This version combines the first and second number, dedicated to the Imperial Navy and its "defense of Asia". Among the stunning photograph are ones showing the attacks on European holdings in Southeast Asia and the attack on Pearl Harbor. Under the direction of Kimura Ihei, Front used the talents of some of the most important of Japan's photographers. The layout was designed under the direction of Hara Hiromu. Wear to the wrappers, which are loose, and some minor water staining, but still an acceptable copy. Heiting and Ryuchi, The Japanese Photobook, No. 89.
