Cloth covered boards of undefinable color, with laurel wreath and rules blind stamped on front and back covers. 503 pp. in Vol. I; 518 pp followed by errata page in Vol. II; 523 pp. followed by publisher's advertisement in Vol. III; 518 pp. in Vol IV. Some scattered foxing throughout the set. Some chipping at spine extremities. Names penciled in on free front endpapers but no underlining or pencil notations throughout. Very small water stains at bottom of text blocks on volume I and IV. Bindings are tight. Interiors clean.. Volumes I and II are designated to be part of a three volume set and dated 1855. Vol. III does not state that it is part of a three volume set and has a date of 1856. Vol. IV has a publication date of 1857.Volumes I through III have different engraved frontispiece portraits of George Washington. Vol. IV has an engraved frontispiece portrait of Martha Washington.
