Kyoto: Wakabayashi Kisuke, 1876 [Meiji 9]. This is most probably the first textbook of Western colour theory printed in Japan for Japanese students. It is almost surely based on European models, but since it is a nineteenth century Japanese book, it possesses a rather unique charm. OCLC lists only the Huntington Library in the US.

1931. ILLINE, Nikolai. URSS en Construction. Leningrad in Construction. 15th Year Number 11. By Nikolai Troshin. [42] pp. Illustrated with a plethora of Russian photomontage images throughout. Folio, 415 x 300 mm, bound in original wrappers. Moscow: Editions d'Etat des Beaux-Arts, 1931. A fine copy of a typical issue of this landmark periodical, this one devoted to Leningrad in construction by Nikolai Illine. As Martin Parr says "from 1930-1940 URSS en Construction employed the best Soviet photo-journalists and graphic designers. Amongst the photographers were Max Alpert, Arkadi Shaikhet, Georgi Zeima, Boris Ignatovich, Semen Fridland and Georgi Shaikhet. 1931. IMAI, Kenji. Soeto roshia shinko kenchiku zuyo [Panorama of Modern Architecture in Russia]. 4 leaves text and 54 plates. Loose as issued in illustrated paper-covered boards, plates 257 x 185 mm., in a new cloth slipcase. Tokyo: Koyosha, 1931. A handsome example of Japanese pre-war book design, in this case heavily influenced by the Bauhaus. A rare book, with OCLC listing only the copy in the National Diet Library.

1892. Tokyo. Teishitsu Hakabutsukan [Imperial Museum]. Shokumon Ruisan. [Historical textiles compiled by the Imperial Museum]. 10 volume corpus with 1,034 superb color woodblock plates with tissue guards, some printed in metallic inks. 4tos, 253 x 182 mm., wrappers laid into two chitsu cases. Tokyo: Yorindo, 1892. A splendid set of this monumental corpus of Japanese designs, which is a masterpiece of the printer's art. One would be hard put to find a better place to find such an assemblage of designs printed with such supreme skill. The set is overall in excellent condition, with a few insignificant water stains in the margins. Sets are of the greatest rarity with OCLC listing only the Metropolitan Museum, Arizona, LC, V & A, Hungarian Academy of Science.

1931. INOKUMA, Asamaro. Yusoku Genji Kagami. 2 volumes containing a total of 54 colour woodcuts. Oblong folio, 265 x 350 mm., in publisher's boards and a new chitsu case. Kyoto: Kondo Happodo, 1931. These two volumes comprise an extraordinary collection of exquisite design plates, which are also masterpieces of the printmaker's art. Each of the plates is divided in two and illustrates objects and scenes from The Tale of Genji. A truly spectacular work and of great rarity with OCLC listing only Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.

[Horse Rein/Bridle Designs]. 10 leaves, including 7 double-page colour woodcuts, on double leaves folded accordion style (orihon). 8vo, 249 x 170 mm., bound in publisher's patterned boards with title-label on top cover, preserved in a new chitsu folding case. Japan, ca. 1834. An attractive collection of coloured woodcut designs for the regimental reins and/or bridles of horses, a fact not obvious from the designs themselves, which take the form of strips of alternating colours. A rare book in fine condition.

1932. ITAGAKI, Takao & Sutemi HORIGUCHI. Kenchiku Yoshiki Ronso. 707, [5] pp., illustrated throughout with architectural diagrams and photographs. Small 4to, 200 x 180 mm., bound in publisher's tan cloth within original printed card slipcase. Tokyo: Rokumonkan, 1932. First edition. An expansive collection of writings on style in architecture curates by Itagaki, the leading proponent of modernism in pre-war Japan, and Horiguchi, who pioneered the union of modern and traditional Japanese architecture. Other contributors include Ichiura Ken, Yamada Mamoru and Taniguchi Yoshiro. Kawakita Renshichiro, who placed impressively in the 1930 international competition for the Ukraine state theatre, details the structure of the designs. Saito Torao contributes what appears to be a ferociously technical study of the airport in modern cities. Illustrated throughout with photographs. 8vo, publisher's decorated linen over boards, with two mounted photographs, and cardboard slipcase, in a new cloth folding box. Tokyo: Iwanami, Shoten, 1929. An unusually fine copy of this important Japanese anthology of modernist architecture, art and design, and its precursors. Among the illustrations are reproductions of buildings by Le Corbusier, Gropius and Mies van der Rohe, and of film stills by Man Ray and Hans Richter. The text is by Itagaki, who is considered the foremost proponent of modernism in pre-war Japan. The design of the book, binding and slipcase by Masao Horino are very much Bauhaus inspired.
