Complete set of Daumier's "Les Bohémiens de Paris" series, all beautifully hand-coloured at the time of publication and heightened in gum arabic. All the prints in the present volume are "sur blanc," i.e. printed individually on superior white wove paper, without the text of the Charivari journal on the verso. A sammelband of two extremely rare lithographic alphabets, the first being the legendary alphabet by Daumier which Segolene Le Men calls the most celebrated of French nineteenth century anthropomorphic alphabets. The second alphabet includes 25 lithographs (letters i and j on two separate plates), all brilliantly hand-colored at the time. Its author remains unknown, but: the names of the publishers Aubert and Junca may be seen on the plates of the letters U and Z. It was certainly published at the same time as Daumier's. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, Russell Sage, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, W.C. Whitney, James J. Hill, George J. Gould, John Jacob Astor, O.H.P. Belmont, Charles M. Schwab Tom L. Johnson, and Senator William Andrews Clark. Copies were probably broken up, which would account for its scarcity. OCLC lists only 8 copies, all in American libraries.

Only edition of this extraordinary children's book, executed entirely in colour lithography by Hérold & Cie., 131 Blvd. St. Michel, Paris, after original designs by the author, about whom nothing is known. In the 'Préface' he states that he composed the work for his children "sheet by sheet during the long evenings of winter." This work is evidently of the greatest rarity and is not listed in any bibliography or library catalogue consulted by us. A superb copy of the rare first edition of this much sought-after "children's" book by the surrealist Claude Cahun. Cahun (Lucy Schwob), the celebrated poet, writer and photographer is one of the most mysterious figures of the Surrealist movement, incorporating many self-portraits in her montages which are imbued with a keen sense of the absurd.

Torino: Nella Reale stamperia di Torino, 1781. A beautiful uncut copy of this scarce guide to Turin, with a large folding map of the city. It contains a comprehensive list of buildings, in many cases with their contents. OCLC lists only CCA and the Getty in North America.

1934. JAPANESE DESIGN. Juraku Cho. 3 volumes, illustrated with a total of 90 colour and monochrome woodblock plates. Oblong folio, 270 x 390 mm., bound in publisher's silk over boards in a new chitsu case. Kyoto: Unsodo, 1934. A spectacular series of designs with superb colour woodblock plates, with each volume devoted to a different motif. Volume 1 is Ryu no maki, the dragon. Volume 2 is Hoo no maki, the phoenix, and Volume 3 is Shishi no maki, the lion. Both the full colour plates and the monochrome plates facing them are masterpieces of the woodblock maker's art. Unsodo is the name of a large Japanese publishing company with branches in both Tokyo and Kyoto. Founded in 1891, this company is still in existence today. From the 1890s through the 1930s, the Unsodo publishing house was involved in printing high quality pattern books for various crafts including textiles and lacquer.Some wear to the boards, but otherwise a fine set. Loose as issued in the original lithographically illustrated wrappers and cloth folding box. A copy of the original lithograph used for the wrappers was also affixed to the inside of the box. Paris: Maeght, 1974. An immaculate copy of one of the classic examples of the magnificent books Miró produced in the last twenty years of his life. The twenty-five lithographs which Miró created for this work form a dazzling kaleidoscope of colours, and it is accompanied by a playful use of typography. Miró chose as the text the poem by the celebrated French surrealist poet Robert Desnos, and the imagery in the book harks back to the work of his own surrealist period.
