Description:
London: Printed by M[iles]. F[lesher]. for John Marriot, and are to be sold at his shop in St Dunstans Church-yard in Fleet-street, 1639. THIRD EDITION. (first ed. 1633). Hardcover. Fine. A very desirable copy, bound in its original binding of polished calf, ruled in blind, with only minor wear and abrasions. The text is in very fine condition and is complete with the portrait of Donne -now rarely encountered- by William Marshall, apparently after a lost miniature by Hillyard, showing Donne as a rakish young man of eighteen, with long hair and an earring in his right ear. Beneath the portrait is a poem by Izaak Walton. Provenance: Richard Jennings (Sotheby's London, 28 April 1952, lot 162) - Allerton C. Hickmott, acquired by Seven Gables, 1962. "The poetry of Donne represents a sharp break with that written by his predecessors and most of his contemporaries. Much Elizabethan verse is decorative and flowery in its quality. Its images adorn; its meter is mellifluous. Image harmonizes with image, and… Read More

A very desirable copy, bound in its original binding of sprinkled calf, ruled in blind, with a discreet repair to the front joint and foot of the spine. The text is in fine condition and is complete with the portrait of Donne -now rarely encountered- by William Marshall, apparently after a lost miniature by Hillyard, showing Donne as a rakish young man of eighteen, with long hair and an earring in his right ear. Beneath the portrait is a poem by Izaak Walton. With the contemporary signature of Cordelia Sandford on the title page and the early signature, "Charles Mackenzie", on leaf A5. With the fine engraved portrait of Donne by Pieter Lombart bound opposite the title page. This copy is bound in contemporary English calf, rebacked so discreetly that it is impossible to see where the leather has been joined. The original gilded red morocco spine label is preserved and a double blind-ruled fillet frames the boards. The engraved portrait and text are in excellent, crisp condition. A truly fine copy. Provenance: This copy was once the property of the author and essayist Sir Thomas Pope Blount (1649-1697) and bears his familiar ms. note "Tittenhanger library" on the free endpaper. Blount inherited the Tittenhanger estate in Hertfordshire in 1678. In his "Essays on Several Subjects" (1692), Blount wrote: "If learning happens to be in the possession of a Fool, 'tis then but a Bawble, and like Dr. Donne's Sun Dial… Read More

Description:
[Rome:]: Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi, after, 1638. Hardcover. Fine. Lettered title across top, extensive description throughout. At right dedication to Cardinal Barberini and lower right 'Romae Superior licentia Anno 1635.' At left, beneath the cartouche: "La presente Pianta ridotta nella forma che al presente si ritrova con le Quattro Capelle fatte dalla Sat m. di Urbano VIII disegata. da me Pietro Po Drei Soprasta della med.ma fab.a." An excellent copy and a fine impression of this rare and important etching of the crypts beneath Saint Peter's Basilica, based on excavations that commenced in 1615. The plate, by Benedetto Drei, was issued in its first form in 1635. For this new impression, the copperplate has been altered by Drei's son, Pietro Paolo, to show new discoveries that came to light during the excavations for the foundations of Bernini's baldachin; the new pier chapels, and other details. Pietro Paolo's engraving retains the 1635 date of his father's original version, but carries the… Read More
