London: George Allen and Unwin, 1966. First Edition. . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Allen and Unwin. 1966, 1966, 1965, Last printing of the first edition, same year as the new 1996 2nd editions. Of all the first edition sets, this is the most scarce. We can only speculate why. 1966 was the first printing of the second edition produced for copyright reasons for the Ballantine paperback USA license problem.They needed a new edition even though they had released this set around May of that year. Jackets and books have uniform wear and tanning, only one owners name in FotR, so we can't say if they were purchased together. Various stains and small tears, but jackets complete and above condition. Books are clean and binding tight. A rare opportunity to add a unique set to your collection. First editions with complete unrestored jackets are disappearing every year.

Allen and Unwin. 1956, 56, 57 Impressions 5,4,3 This is the better of two similar aged sets we are selling. The other set has faint tape marks, this set has no marks or inscriptions. A lovely first edition set. Dust jacket are grey rather than tan, which is much closer to the original unfaded colour. This is now extremely hard to find, in any condition. Uniform fading to jacket colours, but very little tattering to spine ends. Jackets were re-used in these early sets FotR has 6th jacket, TT a 3rd. RotK 3rd. We have indicated in previous listings impressions 7,5,4 or 7, 4,3 in all probability could have been purchase as a set of three titles in the bookshops of the day, some with the first ever slipcases. Scuffing to edges, spines faded, covers bright, but rubbed in places. Pages yellowed. See my 1965 Ballentine paperback set for the full history of the Ace printings.

London: Allen & Unwin, 1954. First Edition. . Hardcover. Very Good/Fair. 32mo - over 4 - 5" tall. Allen and Unwin. 1954, 54, 55 Impressions 1,1,1 of each title. A lovely set. Near fine jackets with no tattering or serious marks. Some minor blemishes. Spines are not too discolored which is unusal. FotR has had some minor repair, not restoration, to the spine head. Looks like it was torn in two places, with slight cocking to Fellowship lettering. TT and RotK have minor paper loss in places, but no repairs. The books are cliean, no foxing, no marks, slight reading curve, and gilt bright. About as good as they come. Sliptext 4 on RotK. You a re paying for dust jackets these days, not books! More serious scuffing to edges, spines faded, covers bright, but rubbed in places. Pages yellowed. Bindings still tight. London: Folio Society, 1977. First Edition. . Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. First Printing, Folio Society 1977 Set. This is the lessor of two sets I'm selling. But still above average. These are quite common to find, but usually the light grey spine 1/4 leather is worn/aged down to the brown under colour, instead of white, also pitted and stained. The gilt can be chipped also. This set still has a good spine, no damage to covers and pages. The cloth covers are generally in better condition, but can have very minor marks in places. Pages and binding are usually as new, unread in many cases The price/value comes down to the degree of wear and staining to the spine faux leather. This one is average. The slipcase has the odd mark, darkening to front edge, but generally found in good condition. This is an overall average set, thus the lower asking price than past finer sets. There are tape marks to the flaps and lighter on the spines which is unfortunate, but can't be readily seen when displayed on your shelf. Owners name in all three books indicate they have stayed together as a set. Allen and Unwin. 1962, 1963, 1963 Impressions 12, 10,10 This set is in much better condition overall, jacket colour is uniform. FotR jacket has a little more tattering to spine ends. Of 1st edition sets you are more or less buying jacket as far as the value, thus this set is priced higher. The photos provide the detail. Books are truly read once condition, all have the Foyles sticker, along with the uniform wear, indicating they were purchased together. Condition, Condition, Condition! As Tolkien book collecting grows in popularity, the availability of collectible/investment original condition books and jackets disappears. It is not just the printing/edition that matters to the value, but that serious collectors want only the best condition. London: George Allen and Unwin, 1963. First Edition. . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Allen & Unwin 1963, 62, 62, impressions 13, 10, 9, 1963 set. Sold in 63, but using up 1962 TT and Rotk. The dust jackets are a bit grubby and spotty on the spines, there minor paper loss to spine ends, less than usually found. Repair of a closed tear made to lower spine of TT, which also has a small stain to the lower rear cover. The other two books have minor spotting in places to the covers, but no serious issues. Bindings tight, gilt bright. All three books have seller's sticker to inside cover indicating they've been kept together likely since purchase. Above average jackets and books , now extremely rare with complete dust jackets.

London: Ballantine, 1965. First Edition. 1st Printing. Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Ballantine 1965 1st printing of each title. Includes Lion Hobbit 1st 1965. Minor scuffing to some edges, spines colours slightly faded, covers bright. Pages yellowed, read many times. FotR has the remains of a owner's bookplate to inside cover, partly pealed off. This is one of the better example we've sold of this now scarce set. These were printed in response to the illegal 1965 Ace paperbacks. Allen and Unwin. all 1967 2nd edition, 2nd printing. 1966 was the first printing of the second edition, but they failed to make all the correction. Professor Tolkien insisted they re-print them immediately. They had to produce a second edition (new edition) in the first place following the copyright disputes over the ACE editions. Thereafter we see all the key text changes and it remain as we see them today other than correction of typoes. Both the first and second printings are must-haves for any collection. They later printings were just re-prints and not as important as far as content corrections. Note, the second printings do not have the correction tot he title errors on the jacket flaps, one of the ways to identify a true 1966 set. This is an exception set with very little chipping to jackets. Some crease lines and minor chipping to spine ends. The spine titles are clear and white, often slightly faded… Read More

London: Betty Ballantine, 1965. First Edition. . No Binding. Fine/No Jacket. Barbara Remington. Betty Ballantine and now Barbara Remington have passed away making this a true historic piece. It was the cult status Tolkien first achieved in America on sale of millions of paperbacks, not in Britain, that would make him a household name by the late 60's. The Hobbit for example was not produced in paper inUK until 1961, Until 1966 his books only sold a few thousand copies a year, hardly a best seller. In fact the Tolkien society fan club first started in America, some five years before. Note, we were recently asked: we own the piece and as the seller, we left the letter addressed anonymously for the next buyer rather than to us.
