Description:
La MaMa. No binding. Fine. Anaïs Nin (source), Tom O'Horgan (director) [New York]: La MaMa, (ca. mid- 1960s), Vintage original 22 x 14" (56 x36 cm.) poster, unfolded, fine. Early in his career, Tom O'Horgan directed many plays for the La MaMa theater off-off Broadway. He began working there in 1964 and, by 1967, he had directed HAIR off-Broadway, which quickly moved to Broadway to great success, so we can safely date this poster from between 1964 and 1967. Victor Lipari is co-credited with O'Horgan on the poster. He was a member of the original LaMama Repertory Company and appeared regularly as an actor in their early productions. La MaMa posters of the 1960s are quite scarce.

Jack Smith. No binding. Just About Fine. Jack Smith (filmmaker) [New York]: Artists Space, [1976]. Vintage original 17 1/2 x 22" (44.5 x 56 cm.) poster, unfolded, just about fine.
Documents a Jack Smith performance, which contained a barbed criticism of filmmaker/critic Jonas Mekas. Smith played a covetous trainer parading out a film actress, played by a toy penguin, for his own financial gain -- a supposed metaphor for his relationship with Jonas Mekas.
Though both underground sensations, as the story goes, Jack Smith felt that Mekas had drummed up controversy over Smith's Flaming Creatures, profiting from control of the print.
Although unsigned, this poster was clearly created by Smith, and hence constitutes a rare example of his graphic work.

Kenneth Anger. No binding. Near Fine. [Los Angeles, ca. 1965]. Vintage original 11 x 8 3/8" (28 x 21.5 cm.) double weight borderless photo. Diagonal crease at upper top left, overall near fine.
Kenneth Anger (1927-2023) was one of the great American underground filmmakers and one of the preeminent names both in LGBTQ film and in the history of alternative, experimental cinema. Working exclusively in short films, he produced almost 40 works since 1937, nine of which have been grouped together as the Magick Lantern Cycle. His films variously merge surrealism with homoeroticism and the occult, and have been described as containing elements of erotica, documentary, psychodrama, and spectacle. Anger is certainly the first whose work addressed homosexuality in an undisguised, non-coded language, and several of his early films were released before the legalization of homosexual acts between consenting adults in the United States.
He also focused on occult themes in many of his films, being fascinated by the… Read More

Vintage original 39.5 x 27" (100 x 69 cm.) poster, unfolded, with a few edge creases and short closed tears at the extremities, near fine. Original poster for the 1975 stream-of-consciousness opera directed by Robert Wilson for its debut in La Rochelle, France, in 1975. Known for his deep concern for the use of language in his work, this piece is characteristic of Wilson's explicit attention to detail. Description:
La MaMa. No binding. Very Good. Meredith Monk (director, composer) [New York]: La MaMa, [1975-6]. Vintage original 22 x 16.75" (56 x 43 cm.) poster. Folded (as issued), with light fold wear (and slight mends on verso with archival paper), one small mend on back with clear tape. Composer, singer, director and choreographer Meredith Monk created QUARRY, an opera in three movements, as a live stage work between 1975-76 with her company The House as a mosaic of images, movement, dialogue, film, sound, light and music. A meditation on WWII and recurring cycles of intolerance, fascism and cruelty in history, QUARRY centers on a sick American child (played by Monk) whose world darkens as her illness progresses.Considered a masterwork of the 20th century, the piece is as prescient and relevant today as it was 40 years ago, with its portrayal of the deleterious effect of an autocratic society on the collective mind, body and spirit. It is at once a myth, a documentary and a memorial.

La MaMa. No binding. Fine. Adrienne Kennedy (playwright) [New York]: La MaMa Annex, [1976]. Vintage original 28.5 x 19.75" (72 x 50 cm.) theatre poster, unfolded, fine. "A Rat's Mass is a poetic, magical-realist one-act play by Adrienne Kennedy, a 20th-century African-American playwright. The play portrays the negative aspects of the black experience in the United States by depicting two African-American children longing for a white child. The play was, like many of Kennedy's plays, not aligned with the Black Arts movement, with a focus on dislocation and femaleness rather than the ideology of blackness. "Kennedy was inspired by the black experience in the United States, and A Rat's Mass, along with most of her work, deals with the dichotomy between blacks and whites in America. The struggle for power and identity is the main focus of this play,… Read More
