Description:
First Italian edition of Italo Svevo's story of an old man's sexual obsession with a young woman with introduction by Eugenio Montale. The noted Italian Modernist, Italo Svevo (b. Ettore Schmitz in Trieste, 1861) was unknown in Italy until his encounter with James Joyce in Trieste in 1907 and later recognition in France by Valery Larbaud and Benjamin Crémieux. This novella-published the year after Svevo's death in an automobile accident-is an account of an older man's attraction to a younger woman. The volume also includes Madre (1910), Vino Generoso (1926), Una burla riuscita (1926), Il Vecchione (1928). The English translation entitled The Nice Old Man and the Pretty Girls and Other Stories was commissioned and published by Virginia Woolf for her Hogarth Press. 12mo. Tight copy in very good condition. Uncut after p.129, slight soiling and rubbing on front and back covers, nicks on edge at p.149, faint water stains on top right edge (p.145-316).
