Topics include an instrument for examining the living eye, the stereoscope, mercerized cotton, early Egyptian chemistry, Iodo-Sulphate of Quinine, Astronomy including the Craig telescope, the Second Comet of 1852, fossil fishes, and photography, mentioning a new process on glass. POOR condition. Rear cover almost detached. Moderate to heavy soiling, moderate foxing, and several creases, large and small, present to the covers. In this Boring and Holway, discussing their experiments and findings with regard to the perceived size mirrored images of the moon and sun at the horizon versus other heights in the sky. Edwin Boring was an American experimental psychologist, involved with intelligence testing during World War I, as well as optical illusion research. This resulted in the 'Boring Figure' as well as noted research in the appearance of the moon (see Wikipedia). GOOD+ condition. Uneven fading and toning to the wraps. Light curling at the corners.

Volume II only of this work (starting with the entry Heptagon), that discusses a variety of machines and the physics behind their operation. This includes a horseshoe machine, a planning machine, marine steam engines, locomotive engines, and many others. FAIR condition. Heavy fading, staining and rippling to the cloth on the exterior, with some soiling, discoloration, tearing and peeling. Cloth frayed and worn along the extremities. A few white paint spots to the leather spine. Interior solid with scattered dampstaining and heavy foxing throughout. Owner's name in pencil on the first endpaper.

Photos, maps, including a few foldouts, and illustrations throughout. A bound volume of the first three years of this journal devoted to the study of the Arctic region, including science and natural history. Includes a few pieces on the Inuit, as well as gold, climate, etc. Provenance: signed bookplate of Clark Garber, an educator employed by the US Bureau of Education in Alaska from 1925-27. GOOD condition. General fading, soiling and spotting to the covers. Minor scuffing and edgewear. Paper toned in the interior. Minor dampstaining to the lower edge of the last few issues of the journal.

A short book for children, providing instructions on how to build several kinds of pumps, including a suction pump, a force pump and a small fire "engine" that can force water 20 feet high. With an inscription dedicating the book to Mariana A. Foster, from the author, "her affectionate brother." FAIR condition. Covers and first few pages VERY tenuously attached to the binding. Uneven fading and scuffing to the covers. Extremities scuffed and curled, with a few minor tears. Heavy foxing to the paper in the interior. Almost all of the cloth missing from the spine.

A collection of bulletins, numbers 31 through 36, issued by the US Geological Survey. This a systematic review of our present knowledge of fossil insects, including myriapods and arachnids; lists and analyses of the mineral springs of the United States; notes on the geology of Northern California; a piece on the Laramie Molluscan Fauna; etc. The bulletin on mineral springs provides a state by state descriptive list of the springs, with names and locations, as well as the constituents in the springs. GOOD condition. Leather scuffed along the spine, hinges and extremities. Minor to moderate soiling and spotting to the leather along the hinges. Uneven fading and darkening. Minor scuffing to the covers. Interior clean and solid.

Contains a short abstract by John Thomson on Platen presses for letter-press printing, embossing, stamping, cutting and scoring. GOOD condition with a center horizontal crease and a center vertical crease (this one less evident). Minor browning and creasing. Some soiling to the rear wrap. Two small lines in pen to page number 2.

GOOD condition. Leather heavily scuffed and faded along the hinges. Corners bumped and worn. Minor fading and soiling. A few faint stains present. Interior hinge cracked at first page of the contents. Text block toned.

Heavy scuffing and fading to the covers, with some loss of paper and superficial loss of leather. Smallish ink stain on the rear cover. Minor soiling. Heavy bumping and scuffing along the extremities. Interior solid. Heavy foxing to the endpapers. Large gift inscription on the second endpaper.

A technical look at the geology of the aforementioned title area, as well as a description of the many mines operating in that area. In GOOD condition with moderate to heavy soiling to the covers, moderate uneven darkening and fading, some scuffing along the extremities and a few minor creases. Price in pencil on the upper front cover, as well as a small pencil notation. Interior clean and solid with some darkening to the pages. All maps appear to be in nice shape, with no apparent tears.

A discussion of sensation recovery in the skin, and experiments conducted on human participants, also discussing the previous experiments by H. Head, W.H.R. Rivers and J. Sherren. GOOD+ condition. Wrappers browned along the extremities. Some curling along the edges. Some browning to the paper.

A letters patent describing the improvements made to Stanley's previous invention of the dividing engine. This describes the improvements and features a schematic. William Ford Stanley was a British inventor and engineer, known for his precision drawing, mathematical and survey equipment. GOOD condition. Paper brittle, with chips, tears and flaking along the edges. General toning. Apparently disbound from a larger work.

Helsingforsiae: F. Tilgmann, Publisher, 1934. Original Wraps. Good. Printed wraps. 26 pp, including a bibliography of the works of Vainio. With a frontispiece photo of Vainio. A short biography of Edvard August Vainio, a Finnish lichenologist. This focuses primarily on his writings and contributions in the field of lichenology. Vainio's collection of lichens helped establish the herbarium at the University of Turku in Finland. GOOD+ condition, slightly ex-library, with call numbers in pencil at the upper front cover. Uneven moderate browning along the wrapper's extremities, with uneven fading and light edgewear. Interior clean and solid.

With several illustrations of apes and skulls throughout. An early work devoted to the topic of human evolution, asserting that man is an animal evolved from a similar animal as that of apes. Huxley draws on fossil records and other studies to present his argument. American edition is preceded by the British edition, with the work also appearing in somewhat different form in lectures. GOOD condition, ex-theological institution library. Spine label, interior treatments/markings present. Heavy uneven fading/offsetting to the covers. Minor soiling and scuffing. Cloth chipped, worn and frayed at the head of the spine. Minor toning in the interior.

Boston: The Beacon Press, 1925. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Hardcover in unclipped jacket. A revised and up to date edition of "The Spark in the Clod." 185 pages including a bibliography. This work seeks to illuminate, in the wake of the firestorm raised by creationists in the early 1900's, the positions held by those believing in evolution and reconciling that position in a positive way toward religion. An important early text in this regard. VERY GOOD jacket on a VERY GOOD+ book. Jacket in protective mylar. Light soiling, darkening and general wear to the jacket. A few small chips and tears present along jacket extremities. Light fading and rubbing to the book itself. Spine sun faded. Inner text clean and tight with the pages somewhat darkened. Nice copy of this work in VG/VG+ condition.

With a section examining the mathematic principles behind navigation and steering in various bodies of water, as well as a section on the American monitors and their use. GOOD condition. Covers faded, with some soiling, minor staining and discoloration. Small chip in the cloth on the lower front cover. Extremities bumped and scuffed. Minor scattered foxing throughout. Owner's name stamp on the first endpaper. One page with math calculations in blue ink.
