Boston: Printed at the Presses of S. Hall and Thomas and Andrews, 1797. Leather. Poor. Full calf leather. Pagination runs A-QQQ 4. Only four out of seven maps called for are present, MISSING the following three maps: the map of Northern States, map of the Southern States, and the map of South America. Maps of the Pacific Islands, North America, West Indies and Georgia present. An alphabetically arranged encyclopedia style work on the geography, settlements and people of North and South America, as well as islands in the Caribbean and South Pacific. This includes the east coast of Australia, then termed New Holland. POOR condition. Front cover DETACHED, with any front endpapers up to the frontis map MISSING (frontis map is present). Leather scuffed, frayed and worn along the extremities and hinges. A few small spots of staining to the covers. Previous owner's bookplate present. Text block solid and a bit toned. Howes M839. All text in German. The first part of Anton Friedrich Busching's geographical history/survey of Europe and Asia, with this being devoted to countries and regions such as Denmark, Spain, The Germanic states, England, Ireland, Hungary, Corsica, Prussia, Scotland, Switzerland, etc. This was one of the first works to use statistical geography and was perhaps one of the first of any scientific merit (Wikipedia). Anton Friedrich Busching was a German historian and educator, perhaps best known for his Erdbeschreibung. FAIR condition, ex-theological library. Small label at the foot of the spine. Library bookplate, a small label and oval ink stamp present on the interior. The leather binding does not cover the fore and upper edges, leaving the boards exposed when looking at those edges. Boston: Cummings and Hilliard, Publisher, 1823. Wraps. Good. Stated fourth edition. Printed wraps. 83 pp. All maps present. A lesson book for children on geography and astronomy, divided by continents for each chapter. This includes North America, South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia, although separate chapters for Australia and Antarctica are not present. Australia depicted as New Holland, with Hawaii depicted as the Sandwich Islands. Each chapter provides a brief history and description of the region it pertains to, noting that parts of Africa are sources for enslaved people. Jacob Abbott Cummings was a Boston area schoolteacher and publisher (see Wikipedia). GOOD condition. 2 inch piece missing from the lower left front cover. No spine wrapper present. Moderate browning to the piece. Foxing and soiling present throughout, with some staining. Large faint dampstain present throughout. Corners curled and creased. A few names in ink at the front. Faint pencil brackets scattered throughout the text.
