A quietly exuberant work that incorporates subtle graphics alongside photographic illustrations and diagrams for retouching photographs and creating visual effects.

First edition, presumed published in the late 1860s, this is a possible later issue with reference to the Vienna Worlds Fair in the publishers ads. Small oblong quarto, 7 x 10.75 inches, bound in pebbled cloth with beveled boards, decorative gilt stamped title. 18 leaves consisted of a title page, preface, 15 leaves of alphabets, and publishers notice at rear. Title pages and three alphabets printed with blue and red accents and gilt ornamentation. A Very Good copy with mild intermittent foxing, sunning and rubbing to boards. Anderson Paper Hangings and Painter's Supply Store, F. Swift Carriages and Business Wagons, and David Cromwell, Grocer. Approx. 5.5 x 4 inches. Good with scuffing a wear, tidemark at the top. Copying images on slate tablets was a popular method for teaching drawing in the classroom. A Good copy with soil and foxing to the plates. One of the plates has a repaired tear and is reattached in place with Japanese paper. Fraying to the cloth with shallow loss at the spine ends, hinges starting. 1874 signature plate of William Shaw Bowen, doctor turned “yellow” journalist whose East Greenwich, RI mansion was featured on postcards, to the front pastedown. Softcover oblong small 4to, 7 x 11 inches. 16 pages of freehand drawing exercises focusing on organic shapes and ornamental designs. Number 5 in the series of drawing books designed for teaching in public schools and used in the late 1870s and '80s. The series included Free Hand (#1-6), Geometric (#7-8), Model and Object (#9) and Perspective (#10). VG with light soil and wear to extremities, a bit of foxing at the centerfold, but a clean, unused copy. Scarce.

Third edition, printed almost immediately after the success of the second and bound in the covers for the earlier 'Ancient and Modern Alphabets' series, which covered the ninth to nineteenth centuries. This volume includes alphabets from the eighth through seventeenth centuries, largely culled from historical sources such as the Bodleian Library, British Museum, Vatican, the works of Albrecht Dürer, illuminated manuscripts, etc. The manuscript origins of many of the examples make them particularly ornate in comparison to the modern alphabets, as well as later collections intended more specifically to draughtsmen and commercial artists. Taupe cloth, small 4to, 124pp. Very Good minus with moderate rubbing to edges and shallow (1/8") loss at the spine ends. Beautiful sepia illustrations and diagrams, including one folding plate. Newell was the director of drawing education in Massachusetts public schools, where Froebel's philosophies of education became prominent at the end of the 19th century. Milton Bradley published many of the books used in drawing curriculum and used in correlation with subjects such as history, literature and geography. The projects are designed to build on the Froebelian gifts and occupations learned in kindergarten, creating tableus and dioramas using sand tables, blackboard drawings and construction paper models.

New York: Keuffel and Esser Co., 1877. Twentieth edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Twenty first edition, copyright 1877 but likely printed closer to 1900. Small oblong cloth 4to, 6.75 x 10.75 inches. Title page + 31 numbered plates, COMPLETE. One of the pages with topographical symbols has some dried flowers tucked in, otherwise the volume appears effectively untouched, just a hint of age toning and shelfwear. Plates of complete alphabets in both traditional and surprisingly modern-looking styles, plus several plates of technical indications and assorted ornaments, including decorative corners and monograms. A stunning example of this classic.

Softcover. Good. Published in 1950 by Gao Gang, Xiang; printed by Tatsuzo Tsuruta in Tokyo (translated via Google, with apologies for any errors). Color title page has "1952" written on it, but the publication date appears to be 1950. Previous owner's inscription on the flyleaf, contents generally unmarked. Printed in red and blue, entirely illustrated with a variety of origami and kirigami. Misaki was an innovator in the use of notation and arrows in the diagrams (this article in OrigamiUSA is a fascinating resource for more on that). In Good condition. The covers have moderate rubbing and light soil, bumping, slight tear to the lower spine. Exercise pages remain crisp and delightful.
