The seller feels there are 2 possible reasons for this variant: (1) this is a test issue released in some areas to gauge the acceptability of the coming price increase, or (2) this is the rumoured Canadian edition (this issue was purchased, used, in Canada). Other than the cover price, the only difference between the 25¢ and 35¢ issues is on the copyright page, where the statement "25¢ per Copy" at the bottom of the 25¢ page has been blackened out on the 35¢ page. Boards have moderate edge wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Scuffing to edges. Mild sunning to spine and edges. Scuffing and light marking overall. Book is slightly bowed and forward leaning.

Acceptable. 146 p., clean and unmarked except for name of former owner on front paste-down in pencil, with date of July 8th 1872; yellow end pages; binding firm but cracked between pp. 50-51; black embossed boards much scuffed, with spine stripped of most of the cloth covering and gilt lettering. Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.

Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering."
