1736. A Paris, chez A. Jombert, 1736. 4to. (page size 215 x 270 mm, most plates about 170 x 125 mm). 30 leaves of numbered engraved plates (22 plates of cupids - including engraved title, 8 plates of masks). Plus, bound as preliminaries, are the engraved titlepage and the second plate of Abraham Bosse's Differents Manières de Dessiner et Peindre. Later 3/4 buckram with marbled boards. Buckram a bit soiled. Plate 13 cut a bit short and plate 18 with a stain in the upper margin, not affecting the plate. Re-issue of this appealing series of engravings by Abraham Bosse after designs by the Italian artist and draughtsman Paolo Farinato (1524 - 1606). Farinati's chiaroscuro drawings were often used as 'modelli'. The first edition was published in 1644. The highly decorative images were intended to be copied as wall decoration, door headings, etc. They show cupids and angels with swags of flowers, bows and arrows, cornucopiae, grape vines, etc. On this work Join-Lambert & Préaud say: "Bosse avait commencé… Read More

U.S.A.: ITC, 1975. First Edition. Published to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the American typewriter, with designers Joel Kaden and Tony Stan reinvigorating the font by dispensing with its rigid spacing. "On every standard typewriter, there's a metal bar with a row of teeth spaced exactly one-tenth of an inch apart. In 1874 this famous bar lifted the typewriter from the inventor's bench and placed it in the office where it changed our reading habits, modified our concepts of legibility, and eventually opened the world of business to women." Bound in stapled colour paper wrappers, 340 mm x 153 mm, 27 pages, a near fine copy.

Description:
London: Unit Editions, 2021. 1st ed. Paperback. New/no dj as issued. A long overdue book examining the extraordinary life and work of artist/designer Ed Fella. Ed Fella is revered by many of the leading names in contemporary design. Now, at long last, there is a book that charts Ed's journey from the commercial design studios of 1950s Detroit to his current position as a widely celebrated artist/designer. Ed Fella: A Life in Images makes extensive use of his vast treasure store of visual delight: it showcases flyers, posters, original sketches, drawings, Polaroids and collages, as well as items from Ed's collection of vernacular design. The book makes unrestricted use of Ed's vast archive. David Cabianca, the book's co-author and its instigator, has surveyed the archive in depth. He writes: "Ed Fella's archive is legion. It branches into numerous streams while sustaining a robust trail of examples along the way. Fella's archive exhausts the possibilities one might find in graphic design. Ed Fella… Read More

"From the dust jacket: Paul Rand's stature as one of the world's leading graphic designers is uncontestable. For half a century his pioneering work in the field of advertising design and typography has exerted a profound influence on the design profession; he almost single-handedly transformed "commercial art" from a practice that catered to the lowest common denominator of taste to one that could assert its place among the fine arts. Among the numerous clients for whom he has been a consultant and/or designer are the American Broadcasting Company, IBM Corporation, and Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
