Fair. 12mo; 240 pages, full calf, top cover rehinged with cloth tape on the endpapers, head of spine and label chipped. She was the first woman to write scientific books for children. "Would any child suppose, that the cloth of which her frock is made, is composed of the fibrous parts of a green plant; or ... that the transparent glass out of which she drinks, was once a heap of sand and ashes; ... The design of the following little work, is to excite the curiosity of young persons on those subjects, by furnishing information on a few of the most obvious." - Preface.

Boston: Alfred Mudge and Son, 1873. First edition. Hardcover. Poor. 8vo, 432 pages, publisher's cloth, rear hinge separating, tidal lines in gutters. For the use in Schools and Families, illustrated by stereoscopic views. The Introduction is "Photography And The Stereoscope". This is rather early on stereoscopy. There are no illustrations: presumably it was meant to be accompanied by a selection of stereoscopic views, but I have found no evidence to support that in fact.

London: Groombridge & Sons. Cloth - Hard Cover. Good/No Dust Jacket. No date of publication, though circa 1870. 491 [1] pages, plus plates. There is an inked presentation with the date of 1873 on the front paste down. Gold and black stamped decoration and lettering. All edges of text are gilded. There is a little wear at spine ends, and a one inch closed tear from crown. Top hinge is cracked and slightly loosened. Title page and frontispiece are partially loosened from binding.

Removed from a bound compilation volume, so the pages are unattached. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked. Illustrated with two fine engravings - each worthy of framing - one of the exterior of Milan Cathedral, the fifth largest cathedral in the world, and the other an interior view of the cathedral. ~JJ~
