Birmingham: Thomas Underwood, 1862 Book. Fair. Half-Leather. [viii], 119p + 32 plates. 13 vignettes listed, but also includes another on the Index to plates page. Some occasional foxing, mainly very pale, including to title page. All but 8 plates very clean, others with spotting mainly to margins. Light brown staining to inner margin of plates and pages due to over liberal use of leather treatment at some point in the past. Bound in very worn half leather, spine very cracked. Front board detached, rear board held on by parcel tape reinforcement to inner hinge. Obvious signs of removal of large bookplate to front pastedown. Ink owner's name pasted to front free end paper and another name erased. Stain to page 14. Last page a little soiled. Generally a nice copy, but in a poor binding. Pages measure approximately 31 x 24 cm..

The first edition thus of this work, illustrated with frontispiece, thirty-one plates - retaining their tissue guards - and thirteen vignettes. Collated, complete.This work was initially published without James Jaffray's textual accompaniment in 1829. Very few copies were produced due to the cost of print-making. The original drawings and plates were preserved and Thomas Underwood presented this reissue thirty years later. This may be the same G W Deverill who authored a work on the Parish Church of Beeston, which was first published as a booklet in 1927. There are also bookplates for Frederick Elkington. This may be the same Frederick Elkington who was a member of a successful company of silversmiths in Birmingham. To the recto of front endpaper there is a bookplate for George Bowden. This is an extra large paper copy with two examples of each print - both on inida paper, one marked Proof - the other a proof before letters. There is some spotting to some of the plates and staining to the edges of the first few plates. In old half leather binding which is rather worn. Inner hinges reinforced with leather. Ink owner's name of John Farr to the front free end paper. Pages here measure approximately 46.5x30 cm where in the large paper edition they are 35x25cm. This is a very large and heavy volume and extra postage will be required to send it outside the UK.
