[381], [3 blank] pp.First Aldine edition of Martial's epigrams, the fifth book in Aldus's series of octavo classics set in the world's first italic type, introduced with his octavo edition of Virgil in April 1501. While the octavo format was not new, it had been most common in devotional works and rarely if ever used for classics. Aldus used this format and the small and narrow italic type primarily for works in verse, which had fairly short lines. Perhaps for that reason, he also departed from what were then the normal proportions of sheets of paper. Aldus himself notes in the 1501 octavo edition of Juvenal and Persius that the books in this format "may be more conveniently held in the hand and learned by heart (not to speak of being read) by everyone", suggesting that they are both more portable and less expensive. [231], [1 blank] pp.First edition, in the original Latin, of the Biblia aurea (Golden Bible), long attributed to Antonius de Rampigollis (ca. 1360-ca. 1423?), a well-known Augustinian monk from Genoa, who in fact wrote the present one-page prologue for a different but related work of his own, the first edition of Compendium morale, by the Ulrich and Afra printing office in 1473. The printing office added Rampigollis’s prologue to the present work, written by Bindo Guerri of Siena (active ca. 1350?, d. 1390), leading to the confusion about the author. The Biblia aurea presents 139 Christian virtues in alphabetical order, each with a heading (beginning with the key word, from abstinentia to zelus indiscretus) and a discussion of the virtue (about one-and-a-half pages on average, but some fill less than a page and some more than two). Woodblock with the Arabic title “Book of the Song of songs of Solomon” followed by a reference to the Hebrew title “Shir hashirim” (Song of songs) transcribed in Arabic, probably produced in the Ottoman regions of the Levant for a rural printing office. A rare survival of an 18th-century printer’s woodblock from the Islamic world, and also an important witness to cross-cultural printing for minority audiences in the Ottoman world. We include an inked impression of the block on 18th-century paper paper, clearly not printed recently, because it does not show the worm holes that now appear in the block. The text reads: "Safr Nishd al-nishad li-Süleyman wa’ighal ba-l’Abraniyat Shir hashirim".The inked impression of the woodblock is pasted to a piece cut out of a Croatian printed prayer book compiled by a Croatian Catholic in Bosnia, Rafo Barišic, Pasha duhovna (Spiritual pasture), on spirituality and Passover, first published at Rome in 1842.Some small wormholes in the wood, post-dating the… Read More
