Description:
New York, NY: William H. Wise. Fine. 1929. Reprint. Broadside. Some leaves have slight binding perforations at the left edge.; Twelve of Elbert Hubbard's mottos, or "epigrams," as he would sometimes call them. Each motto printed in an Arts and Crafts style: text within a graphic frame with decorative borders, some styled after similar borders by William Morris' Kelmscott Press. Most have decorative capitals, are printed in black and red text, and the Roycroft cross-and-orb device is below the text. The mottos are thus: 1. I wish to be simple, honest, frank - natural, clean in mind and body, unaffected - ready to say "I do not know," if so it be - to meet all men on an absolute equality - to face any obstacle and meet any difficulty unabashed and unafraid - to cultivate the hospitable mind and the receptive heart. 2. The Mintage Of Wisdom Is To Know That Rest Is Rust And That Real Life Is In Love, Laughter And Work. 3. If You Want Work Well Done, Select A Busy…

Description:
Tavares, FL: SPS Publications. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1997. Softcover. Faintest scuffing to covers from shelving. ; Sourced from personal correspondence, records, and interviews with those involved with Roycroft, this is a biography of both Elbert and Alice Hubbard. Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) founded The Roycroft Shops, based on his version of the European Arts and Crafts movement. Roycroft ultimately became an artisan community based on hand crafts and publishing, with Elbert writing and lecturing to capitalize the business. Hubbard's second wife Alice Hubbard (1861-1915) was profoundly influential in Elbert's pursuits, wrote books that Roycroft published, and directed and managed much of the business of Roycroft. This book covers both positives and negatives in the Hubbard's mutually-supportive relationship, as they lived and worked together before their deaths in the 1915 sinking of the S. S. Lusitania. Foreword by Elbert "Bert" Hubbard II, son of Elbert…

Description:
East Aurora, NY: Roycrofters. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1903. First Edition. Softcover. One Elbert Hubbard's best works, the text is surrounded by beautiful Art Nouveau woodcuts. The original limp green suede covers are faded to brown along the edges. The green leather text label on the front cover in nice condition and the gilt lettering is still bright. The pages are uncut on the top (as issued), and there is a bit of light bleed through from the black text block outline onto the opposite page in some cases (the last page colophone is especially noticeable since the colophone is printed on white paper with no woodcut surrounding it). White silk moire inside front and back covers. The contents are string tied and loose, and the glue has dried leaving them separated from the covers (could be easily repaired). Still has the green string bookmark. Previous owner name on front end paper. This is a prize Roycrofter book for any collector. ; Color Illustrations; 12mo 7"…

East Aurora, New York: The Roycroft Printing Shop. Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1896. Limited/Numbered Edition. Hardcover. A light mark to the front cover, spine tail slightly bumped, bruise or dent to the head edge of the rear cover. Occasional, foxing to the pages, some pages foxed in the gutter at the head. ; In a periodical, Roycroft printed the first US appearance of George Bernard Shaw's essay on the institution of the church, primarily the Catholic Church, and churchgoers' reliance on organized religion. Although Shaw, via a postcard, had given Elbert Hubbard permission to publish this work, Shaw was horrified to find that Hubbard had taken liberties and edited the essay instead of printing it as it stood. Thereafter, Shaw disassociated himself from the Roycroft version, treated it as a piracy, and did not miss an opportunity to vilify Elbert Hubbard. From the essay, Shaw's thoughts on how drink, smoke, drugs, or the lack thereof, produce creative works, including…
