Description:
Chicago: Cresap, McCormick and Paget, 1963. First edition thus. Very Good. 16mo, folded facsimile letter in a printed portfolio pocket. In 1798, Wolcott had an unfulfilled contract for necessary muskets. He signed a new "contract with inventor Eli Whitney, who by ingenuity alone, proposed to deliver ten thousand stand of muskets in 28 months - a bold proposal in an era when precision production was still a handicraft. Reproduced here is Whitney's letter ... stipulating the conditions of the contract and demonstrating the daring and confidence of the man who was to change the course of American industry." Issued by the Chicago office of Cresap, McCormick, and inscribed by James Carson Worthy.
