First issued in 1872. From 1872 Zollner, astrophysicist and one who studied optical illusions, held the chair of astrophysics at Leipzig University. Zollner's work showed that electrical processes of considerable intensity must take place in comets. "Of far-reaching significance was Zollner's theory of comets, in which he correctly assumed that elements of the nucleus of a comet gradually vaporize as it nears the sun." – DSB XIV, p. 629. NW/LODER-Small quarto, 100 page intro, 524 pages text, 10 PLATES, 12 page afterward by Zollner. IN THE ORIGINAL tan wraps with 1872 etc on the cover, strip of tape on front spine. Light tide marks throughout the book, tide marks on the ten plates of illustrations, with the pages yet uncut. Some chips to the cover edges, and a small pea-size hole is in the middle of the back cover. Yet a good copy.
