In the Fiorst World War the Hampshire had 36 battalions serving - a higher percentage of men than had any other county. But their history is much older that than. Raised in Ireland in 1702 by Thomas Meredith, an officer of William III's army, they began their active career in Marlborough's battles in the War of the Spanish Succession. When regiments were numbered they became the 37th Regiment of Foot and were later united with the 67th and became the North and South Hampshires. They gained numerous battle honours and in the attack on the Taku Forts in China on the morning of 21st August 1860 four of their men were awarded V.C.'s - all won, as tradition has it, 'before breakfast'.
