New York: Morris & Willis, 1844. First complete edition. Hardcover. Good and tight, free of extraneous marks but with foxing to most page edges. Bumps to corners and wear to cover edges.. Marbled brown boards with quarter leather and gilt lettering. Decorative end papers. Bound by R. Hathaway, Bennington, New Hampshire. 216 pp. with no illus. 139 letters written by Willis and originally published in the New York Mirror to much severe criticism. Subsequently, a publisher in London printed a portion of the letters, to better reception, in several editions. This volume is a copy of the first, complete and unabridged edition. ("Offensive" sections were deleted for the American printings.) Letter I starts with Willis's departure from Philadelphia, past Cape Henlopen and out to sea, and the final letter ends with a return to England, where he remained in London for the winter.
