Poor Condition; 1707; brown leather covers; front cover detached but present; most of backstrip is chipped off; covers are heavily worn and marked; no jacket; markings to endpapers, pastedowns and title page; internal soiling and spotting; 181 pages followed by the index, some advertisements and then "The Value of Church and College Leases Considered: and the Advantage of the Lessees", which is a 25 page letter published in 1719; 12mo, 6 3/4" - 7 3/4" Tall

Binding in full leather with five raised bands on the spine. Cover edges and corners are worn. The hinges are broken but the cords are holding the covers well. Former owner's bookplate on front pastedown: "William Charles De Meudon Earl Fitzwilliam." Also, inked letters at top left of pastedown: B: 5: 51 (marked through) E. VI. 5. No title on spine. Gently effaced library ownershp stamps on bottom title page and first text page. Paper clean and unfoxed. 147 pages followed by a 2-page index, and an appendix of 30 pages plus 12 plates illustrating gold coins of the kings of England.

Printed for T. Osborne,, 1745.. 1745 [10],147,[3];30,[2]p.,XII plates. The Appendix has a separate dated title page. Final advert leaf. Contemporary gilt ruled calf, rubbed on edges and corners. Front joint tender. Spine with raised bands and a contrasting label. ESTC T145226. Second edition, with the Appendix and plates which did not appear in the 1707 edition.

Fleetwood is considered to be the “first English collector of statistics of prices”. (Palgrave I p. 89). Appended, with separate title, is an illustrated historical review of English coinage. FIRST ENGLISH WORK ON THE HISTORY OF PRICES first edition 8vo. [16], 181, [1 (blank)], [5 (index)], [5 (advts.)]pp., contemporary calf, sides decorated with nesting sprinkled panels defined and decorated by blind tooling. Beautiful copy. Not uncommon, but rare in this condition. Adare Manor pencilled shelf number on endpaper.ESTC t4823 KRESS 2553Fleetwood (1656-1723), a zealous whig and Royal Chaplain, was also an able antiquarian and the first English collector of statistics on prices. This work then "brought together all the information he could find on the values of money and the prices of commodities during the Middle Ages in England; and it is still well worth consulting" [Palgrave]. Palgrave was correct as modern scholarship had arrived at figures very close to Fleetwood's.
