Description:
Philadelphia: Mifflin and Parr, 1844. 32pp. Self-wrappers. Institutional stamp on title page. Text is clean and bright. Very good. Third edition, reprinted the same year as the previous two. This letter, published originally in the Washington GLOBE of Feb. 3, 1844, is credited by Streeter with being the start of the debate on the annexation of Texas. Walker attempted to reassure the North that annexation would mean more commerce and an ultimate diminution of slavery, while telling the South that Texas on her own would enter an alliance with England and sell cotton direct, undermining southern markets.
