Description:
Washington: A. & G. Wa, 1806. 24pp. Gathered signatures, stitched. Old stab holes in left margin. Minor edge wear. Moderate foxing. Overall very good. Beaumarchais, a wealthy French merchant, was a strong proponent of aiding the Americans during the Revolution. He was instrumental in obtaining and transporting arms and ammunition for the Americans under the firm name of Roderique Hortalez & Co. However, there was some confusion about whether the supplies were gifts from the French government, and Beaumarchais was never properly compensated. His heirs were finally paid $800,000 in 1835, only a portion of the actual amount owed Beaumarchais. This pamphlet relates to ongoing investigations of the Beaumarchais claims, at a time when the United States government believed its debt to be only $41,119.75. Scarce. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 11704.
