Map endpapers of the Isle of Wight and the ships route around it; xviii+ 335 pp. with index; folding plate at rear. Numerous photographic and vintage image reproduction plates. Generally fine. No jacket. The story of the famous 19th century yacht "America". She was commissioned by a group pf prominent members of the New York Yacht Club including Commodore John Cox Stevens, cost $30,000 to bulld (aproximately $1.1 million in today's dollars) and launched May 3, 1851. Captained by Richard Brown, the "America" sailed for Europe in June to enter in the first America's Cup race which was then a 53-mile race around England's Isle of Wight, a race watched by Queen Victoria.
