The third edition of this work, originally published in 1753. Uncommon in all editions. Featuring an exhaustive and complete Welsh-English dictionary, also with a compendious Welsh grammar with all rules in English and Welsh proverbs. No half title as issued. This was used by Dr Samuel Johnson in compiling 'A Dictionary of the English Language' in 1755.No advertising leaf to rear as called for in this edition.Compiled by the Rev Thomas Richards of Coychurch, Welsh curate from Coychurch in the 18th century. This is his most well-known work. In full calf binding, titles in gilt to red calf spine label. Externally sound with light loss to tail of spine, boards lightly marked and rubbed, light rubbing to spine. Griffith Griffith inscription to front free endpaper, dated 1818. Richards, lexicographer and Church of England clergyman, whose Welsh-English dictionary, was an adaptation of the Welsh-Latin section from John Davies's Dictionarium duplex (1632), with additions from Edward Lhuyd's Archaeologia Britannica (1707), the glossary of William Wotton's Cyfreithjeu Hywel Dda ac eraill (1730), and vocabulary supplied by Richard Morris (1703-1779) and various other sources. The British Language was an ancestral Celtic tongue spoken across what is now England and Wales until the Roman invasion, when it vied with Latin. It survived until the Arthurian era and has largely become modern Welsh and Breton. .
