Description:
London: T. Bensley. Good with no dust jacket. 1799 & 1818. Hardcover. 3 separate Volumes--two different works, and all bound in the same style of binding. The name of the person who authored the letters signed by "Junius" between 1769 and 1772 and printed in London's "Public Advertiser" has been the subject of much speculation. Many scholars believe the author was Francis Philip, but this has not been confirmed. Junius' letters are reproduced in these two volumes. Ths two volume set bound in green leather with five raised bands, top edges gilt. Each volume contains an extra illustrated title page that preceeds the standard title page. Each volume also contains an illustrated frontis portrait as well as several other portraits depicting the people to whom his letters were addressed. These letters informed Englishmen of their historical and constitutional rights and also pointed out how those rights had been infringed upon. This set "Printed by T.… Read More

Description:
NY: Kirk & Mercein, 1818. 8vo. 300pp. Portrait frontispiece, folding facsimiles. Original boards (rubbed, corners and edges worn) rebacked with paper, new paper spine label. Very good untrimmed copy. First American edition, from the second English edition, corrected and enlarged. The author makes the case for Sir Phillip Francis (see DNB for a long article with relevant discussion to this work). Junius, writing 1769-1772, was the pseudonym of a "well-informed Whig who poured brilliantly slanderous invective upon Tory-minded English ministers for a 'series of inconsistent measures' which allegedly ruined England and drove the colonies into excesses little short of rebellion" (DNB). John Taylor's scarce first edition work trying to identify Junius, including the illustrated 'Supplement'. The scarce first edition. Two volumes in one, including 'A Supplement to Junius Identified' bound to the rear.An intriguing work by John Taylor, in which he explores the possibilities of the identity of Junius. Taylor draws the conclusion in this work, likely correctly, that Junius was Sir Philip Francis.'Junius' was an anonymous writer who wrote a series of sixty-nine letters for the 'Public Advertiser' from 1769 to 1772. The letters were critical of the government of King George III, a riveting political commentary of the Georgian era.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and five folding plates to 'Supplement'.'A Supplement to Junius Identified' is the second edition, published in 1817.Bookplate of Thomas Munro to the front paste down.
