This edition missing all illustrations with blanks instead; insert near title page explains they can be sent for by postal order. Several fold-out maps are present. Green advert sheet bound in advertising Old Father Thames. B&W frontispiece. Pages 27-30 and surrounding plates are detached but present. Notable foxing and tanning to endpapers and page edges. Previous owner's name to front paste down and above preface. Both hinges cracked with netting visible, thus the boards are slack. Some gutter cracking and loose pages. Mild wear and bumping to spine, board edges and corners, with crushing to spine ends and frayed corners. Minor tanning to spine, with scuffing and marking across the boards. Slight scratches. Gilt brighter to front.

Taunt's new map of the Tames is the first map and is dated 1897, I did not see another date for this publication in the book. The green boards have gilt title and graphics with marsh scenes. The top and base of the spine have short tears, three of the corners are just starting to fray. The front hinge is torn but the webbing is intact and the rear hinge has a two cm tear. The large fold out map is present and has no tears, photo illustrations by Henry Taunt tipped in book with 206 pages.

Third edition, first printing octavo hardback, Dark green cloth pictorial gilt 170 pp plus 52 pages of adverts before and after the text illustrated with frontispiece, One general two page 33 sectional two page maps and 100 real sepia photos maps. Good condition Sound binding, corners rubbed. Gilt titles also a little rubbed Original owner has written his name and address twice at the head pf two of the early advert pages.

Taunt, 1873 second revised edition published in 1873, title states it has EIGHTY photos, but I have collated it and there are only 79 but there seem to be none missing ( ie no places indicated to binder to paste one of the tipped on photos, where there is one missing), landscape format 250 x 165mm, original green cloth with blind embossed design and gilt titled upper board, some rubbing to edges and corners with the boards showing through the worn away cloth in places, plain spine heavily rubbed with loss to the cloth at the spine ends, internally a clean copy with some offset browing to the endpapers, one tiny wormhole to upper board near spine, minor worm to the top margin of the last quarter of the text block, at most this is only about 3 small pin holes, the lower (i.e. rear) board and paste down have more wormholes, but still only about a dozen, rear fep and last few pages (adverts) have historic watermark to the bottom corner, a good copy with no major faults excepting the… Read More

Worn at edges and marked boards; internally yellowed and occasional smudges not affecting text. A detailed map of the Thames, along with relevant information for the river-goer, including fishing spots, shops and inns to stay at; with each map are 80 small pasted-down photographs. Ink owner's name and address to prelim. This copy has lots of small and very neat ink annotations with additional information (e.g. "take the left bank here - the right is very shallow"), that if anything complement the maps. Double page map, 33 sectional maps illustrated with real photographs and one leaf of photographs of sights on the Warwickshire Avon which has a sepia printed background. Red pictorial cloth binding with gilt and black decoration of foliage and a dragonfly. The spine and head of the boards are faded but still an attractive binding. The endpapers show some marks from old repairs which have been removed. The front board paper has an small ink blot and an inscription dated 1880. Internally clean and tight. A well restored example.

Endpaper ads. 24 full page maps with either 3 or 4 tipped on original albumen photographs per map. (5.2 X 3.2 cm). A bit of soiling to the pages but overall in excellent condition with the images unfaded. Two of the text pages have been slightly defaced with and old blue X being drawn across the text as if the person disagreed with the text! very good A rare and early photographically illustrated guide to the Thames River. The descriptions of the towns along the route are very interesting listing hotels, inns, fisherman and watermen. The photos are very quaint and show the towns, Abbey's, bridges, locks, college's etc along the way. There was a second edition a year later. 1872
