Description:
New York, NY: Ginn and Company, 1934. Hardcover. Good. First of this revised edition. In original green cloth, spine dulled, else good. A very solid copy. No former owner marks. A classic work in sociology from a classical liberal American Yale social scientist. He adopted the term "ethnocentrism" to identify the roots of imperialism, which he strongly opposed, and as a spokesman against it he was in favor of the "forgotten man" of the middle class, a term he coined. As a sociologist, his major accomplishments were developing the concepts of diffusion, folkways, and ethnocentrism. Sumner's work with folkways led him to conclude that attempts at government-mandated reform were useless.
