London: Duckworth & Co., 1903. [German Drama] FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, INSCRIBED BY MRS PATRICK CAMPBELL. Octavo (20 x 13cm), pp.[2] viii; 185 [3]. Publisher's cream vegetable parchment over boards, with gilt titles to spine and upper, and green decoration to upper. All edges untrimmed. With a hand-written invitation to a rehearsal of the play with Mrs. Patrick Campbell's Theatre Company, in august 1903, loose to preliminaries. Blue ink ownership of Mrs. Patrick Campbell to fly-leaf, and a red pencil mark to margin of p.120. Upper hinge starting. Heavy wear and soiling to binding; spine toned. Good. The illustrious actress Mrs. Patrick Campbell (Beatrice Tanner) starred in and directed a number of Sudermann's plays in their English versions, both on Broadway in New York, and the West End in London. An important association copy.
