Oversized (tall) hardcover without dust jacket, 144 pages including many black-and-white and partially coloured drawings throughout;---laid in is a a small two-page price list also dated 1915 from bookseller Alfred P. Schmidt featuring "When Life's at the Dawn" extracted from The Gentlest Gianr;---pale blue covers with black and grey lettering and decoration has been exposed to water and has patchy discolouration (although no waterstaining is evident inside), light shelf wear along edges, heavier to corners, spine covering entirely missing except for a piece near the top with the title and one bird image, but spine backing is intact and book is tight in binding, so overall time has not been kind but otherwise the book is gently used, not deliberately abused, free front endpaper neatly removed, the remaining three endpapers are age toned far more than the pages which are very clean and unmarked (no child's acribbles, and…

New York: Robert M. McBride & Company, 1929. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.. Warmly inscribed first edition of this Art Nouveau-illustrated charming book of poems, with interesting ephemera surrounding an Anna Bird Stewart signing event in 1929. This copy of THE GENTLEST GIANT is a memento of an event that took place in Canon City, Colorado in October 1929. Alongside the warm inscription to Canon City teacher Dorothy Quine (with a wish tucked "up under the star" from the titular GIANT), there is a typewritten slip detailing how to register for the signing and banquet as well as a pamphlet about Anna Bird Stewart presumably handed out at the event. 8.25'' x 5.75''. Original blue cloth binding with orange stamping. Original unclipped ($2.00) yellow pictorial dust jacket. Orange topstain, fore-edge machine deckle. Illustrated in black and white. 150 pages, partially unopened. Inscribed by Stewart to Dorothy Quine to front flyleaf, dated October 21, 1929, Canon city. Single leaf typewritten…

Description:
Bound by John Frederick Grabau. Inscribed by both the Author and Illustrator…Tall 8vo, 144 pages including many Wonderfully illustrated, black-and-white and partially coloured drawings throughout; A humorous book of poetry for children.
John Frederick Grabau was born in Wisconsin in 1878. He trained as an artistic bookbinder, apprenticing in the printing shop of Gies & Co. and at Peter Paul's bookbindery. In 1902, Grabau became the protégé of Louis H. Kinder at the Roycroft community bindery. Kinder founded the Roycroft Bindery in 1896 and attracted many talented young artists, including Grabau, Harry Avery, and Charles Youngers. The Roycroft community produced some of the finest hand-crafted books, furniture, lamps and metalwork of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Grabau left Roycroft in 1905 to found the Derome Bindery in Buffalo, New York. He named the bindery after Nicolas Derome, who was noted for his dentelle borders. Grabau died in Aurora, New York, in 1948.
