Includes a brief description of progress of American manufacturers, and an in-depth (and favorable) account of the factory at Lowell.

See Sabin 78168; Kress C-6716. The first edition of an account of the conditions of the Lowell textile mills and their female work force. Scoresby visited the US in the summer of 1844 and gathered information for a series of lectures on the factory system. In response to a request by listeners, the author enlarged and expanded the lecture material to create this volume. Scoresby (1789-1857) was the son of the arctic explorer and was himself involved with Greenland whale fishery before entering the ministry.
