Inscribed to Harold Adams by Samuel Looker, New Year 1951. Adams was founder of the Richard Jefferies Society. Looker devoted himself to Jefferies for over half a century, publishing numerous volumes of journalistic material which had never previously been re-printed, and new matter from diaries, notebooks and unfinished manuscripts that he had tracked down. Looker's biography: 'Richard Jefferies: Man of the Fields' was published after the author's death in 1965. In its earliest form, Rossetti's poem, 'The Staff and Scrip', was first published in 'The Oxford and Cambridge Magazine' in 1856.
