Ephraim Moses Lilien (1874-1925) was an important artist and printmaker, was perhaps the first artist to be an active Zionist. This is one of his first published books--he was only 28--but his mastery is already evident and is well-suited to Rosenfeld's gritty subject matter. It was work like this that inspired Stefan Zweig's 1903 monograph, "E.M. Lilien und sein Werk." It has been noted that an Edenic (i.e. naked save for a well-placed plant) figure carrying a harp on page 116 is Herzl.
