Les Darcy was a champion boxer at the age of 16 and dead at the age of 21. He was a boxing phenomenon and took on all comers and basically won every bout. But, at the height of his career World War I was in the process of being fought, and, he wanted not to be manipulated as a tool for recruitment posters, left for America, where he in turn wowed the American public with his boxing prowess. This came to an abrupt end when a infected tooth led to septicaemia, peritonitis and death in 1917. People on both sides of the Atlantic mourned the loss of a true original.
