Lukin, a Londoner, found work as a road foreman in colonial Natal in 1879. He saw action during the Anglo-Zulu War, being wounded at the final Battle of Ulundi. Thereafter, his military career was closely connected with the Cape Mounted Rifles, with whom he served in the Langeberg Campaign of 1897.
