A facsimile reprint of a study of the conditions of the production and distribution of literature from the fall of the Roman Empire to the close of the seventeenth century. The original edition was published in 1896-97. Part I deals with books in manuscript; Part II with the earlier printed books. George Haven Putnam (1844-1930) was an American publisher, soldier, and writer.

The books are in Very Good- condition and were likely issued without a dust jacket. The slipcase is in Very Good- condition. There is some light bumping to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are mostly clean and bright, but there are occasional inked notations throughout the text. There are bookplates on both of the front pastedown pages. The slipcase has some bumping rubbing and wear to the corners and edges.
