Netherlands: Publisher Not Known, 1570. a very good+ map, 6 x 7"; Abraham Ortelius (1527-98). One of the first and greatest of the Dutch map makers. His "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" of 1570 is generally considered the first modern Atlas. For this work, large copper plates were engraved, and from time to time alterations were made in these plates as various editions were issued, even as late as 1693-- long after Ortelius' death. These Maps are much favoured by collectors because of a quaint, rather archaic quality of drawing. They are exceedingly decorative, and careful examination of any one of them will disclose curious little fugures, scenes or other decorations. This map is one of these original engravings with nice old colouring. This map will make a nice gift and is quite scarce.. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good+/No Dustjacket. 6 x 7".

Antwerp , Circa 1579. Very Good. Copper engraved map, coloured by hand, central fold, Latin text on verso. Sheet size: 16 1/4" x 21 1/8" (413mm x 537mm). Condition: Just some neat reinforcing to slight central fold parting otherwise very good. A highly significant map, one of the cornerstone maps of Africa. Shows the supposed central African kingdom of the Christian priest-king Prester John. Who, according to legend, stood as the main defence against the forces of barbarism. The origin of the Nile is shown as being the mythical twin lakes of Zaire and Zaflan, the source of which as the Mountains of the Moon. The decorative elements include two pairs of large elephants, sea monsters and a dhow. Two large strapworks contain the title and the text of the legend. Priest John is a mythical king with a long cartographical history, who was supposed to provide a stronghold against the Barbarians, and to be an ally for crusaders. Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher of the first 'modern style' atlas in 1570, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World). La Florida Antiquarian/Antique Hand-Colored Map displaying Southeast North America, what is now the South-Eastern United States with parts of what are now the states of Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas and Mexico. Map 6 x 9 inches on rag paper (aka laid paper) sheet 8.25 x 10.3 inches. This map is regarded as the first printed map to feature the Florida peninsula when the territory was owned by the Spanish Empire areas of the New World. It first appeared in the 1584 edition of "Theatrum orbis terrarum". (The first edition of "Theatrum" was 1570 but did not include this map.)This engraved map is based on a drawing by Geronimo de Chiaves (1523-1574), the royal cosmographer and cartographer to Philip II, king of Spain. and appeared in 'Theatrum orbis terrarum' published by Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) in 1584. Antwerp: Officina Plantiniana, 1591. First edition. THE FIRST MODERN WORLD ATLAS HAND-COLOURED AND HEIGHTENED IN GOLD. Fourth Latin edition of the first modern world atlas, and a copy hand-coloured and heightened in gold. First published in 1570, the Theatrum is the first atlas to contain maps printed in a uniform style and format and to display a catalogue of the authors whose source Ortelius used in the drawing of the maps. Ortelius's atlas "set a standard by which subsequent collections would be judged and compared" (Short). Even though it was the most expensive work published at the time, it proved an instant success with four versions of the first edition being printed in 1570 alone. Several editions were printed at the Officina Plantiniana at the end of the 16th century and from 1585 Ortelius began to include historical maps in a section called Paregon.
