VG (book- name of previous owner in ink to front board., Paper covers rubbed and a little soiled. Corners rubbed. Paper title label soiled with a little loss to extremities but readable. 'Nimrod' is the pseudonym for Charles James Apperley, a Welsh sportsman and sporting writer from an English family. Other works by Apperley include 'Nimrods German Tour' and 'The Chase, the Turf and the Road'. He also contributed regularly to important Sporting Magazines. This work looks at the condition of hunters, the effects of stable management conditions, treatment of hunters in the summer and further ailments that hunters can have. With the bookplate of one Oliver Collett to the front pastedown. A smart first edition of this work. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. [5], vi-vii, [2], 2-503, [5] pp. Half bound in red morocco over red cloth, spine has fived raised bands, with lettering and decorations in gilt. All edges gilt. Finely bound by Zaehnsdorf. With notes and a copious index. Text internally clean and bright. Apperley was a Welsh writer and sportsman who wrote on hunting and horse racing in England during the early nineteenth century. An exceptional copy of a history of recreation during the early nineteenth century, and a nice example of a Zaehnsdorf binding. A very near Fine book with minor wear to the joints, else a beautiful copy.

The first book from the pen of "unquestionably the greatest hunting correspondent of all time" (Higginson) - with everything one might wish to know about high-bred racers and hunters - bran mashes, broken wind, capped hocks, Cherry's elastic pads, clipping, colic, curbs, docking, farcy, firing, founder, frog, megrims, rowels, spavins, splents and so much more - in entertaining anecdote and detailed practice. Medium 8vo (224 x 138mm). (viii),(504),[ii] + 8pp advertisements dated January 1832. Bound in a lavish later (early twentieth-century) half crimson morocco, banded and gilt with horse and horseshoes, by Root & Son; top edge gilt; ribbon marker; marbled endpapers; binding skilfully touched up in one or two places; occasional minor spotting, but a very handsome copy. Podeschi 138 - not noting the inserted advertisement leaves of the present copy.

London: M. A. Pittman, 1831. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 503pp., extra-illustrated. A very good copy in later 19th century 3/4 red morocco and marbled boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Gently worn at two corners, and the spine just a tinge darkened; a very good example, internally clean. This copy specially bound with at least a dozen plates of horses, mostly dating from around the time of the book's publication. There are two maps, depicting areas around Shropshire, Herefordshire and Leicestershire, which presumably held significance in riding culture of the period. A hand-colored folding plate etitled the "Suffolk Punch Horse" is dated 1807. Some of the plates are moderately foxed. Altogether a handsome example of a Regency period English equestrian volume, noted in pencil on a front blank by a 19th century bookseller as a "unique copy" due to its specially bound-in plates.
