Nightingale established her reputation as a skillful manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, where her efforts to improve sanitation, hygiene, nutrition and general living conditions resulted in a drastic reduction in the death rate among wounded soldiers. In 1860 she founded her training school for nurses, following the publication the previous year of the present work, which transformed nursing and health care and served as the standard introduction to the profession.
