New York City: American Geographical Soc, 1926. 1st edition. Hardcover. pp. xii, 374. Small 4to. Bound in the original grey cloth. With two folding maps, and black & white photos. This copy with the signature on the front endpaper of the scholar and Arab Studies professor, Dr. Louise Sweet. A few of her pencilled notations to the contents. Rubbing to board edges and light general soiling to cloth. The maps are in excellent condition. A very good copy. Musil (1868-1944) was a Czech explorer, orientalist, and writer. In the years 1887-1891 he studied at the Theological faculty of Olomouc, and was consecrated a priest in 1891. He received his doctorate in theology in 1895. In the years 1895 to 1898, he studied at the Dominican Bible School in Jerusalem, and at the Jesuit University of St. Joseph in Beirut. He traveled extensively throughout the Arab world and kept coming back to it until 1917, collecting a huge body of scientific material. Illustrated with diagrams, b/w photographs and two maps tucked into rear pocket.xii+374pp.  VG- condition. Gray cloth boards lightly rubbed/grimed.  Gilt titling on spine and cover still bright on black tile background. Dust spots to top page edge. Light foxing through page 7, then again beginning in the back index.  Rust stains around edges of map pocket in rear.  Otherwise clean with no markings, square and securely bound.  Alois Musil's (the "Czech Lawrence of Arabia") account of his travels through the region in the early 20th century.
