Description:
Philadelphia: F.W. Greenough, 1838. Hand-coloured lithograph by J.T. Bowen after George Cooke's 1837 portrait. A fine image from McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America': `One of the most important [works] ever published on the American Indians' (Field),` a landmark in American culture' (Horan) and an invaluable contemporary record of a vanished way of life. A reputedly fierce warrior with an imposing presence, Kish-Ke-Kosh attended the delegation of Sioux and Fox and Sauk chiefs at the War Department in 1837, where the two tribes signed a tenuous peace treaty. Despite his normal appearance, his name roughly translated means 'The Man with One Leg' or 'He with a Cut Hoof'. The Fox tribe, which was originally known as the Mesquaki, inhabited the Great Lakes region of the United States and merged with the Sauk tribe in the eighteenth century.
