Jacket a little faded at and near spine, 2cm tear at bottom front corner, foxing to top edge, handwritten addition to chronology noting Whiteley's death in 1992 of a drug overdose, printed chronology ends in 1978. No date but 1979. The monograph, written by a close associate of the artist's family, gives a general analysis of the artist's work while at the same time emphasising Whiteley the man. In many cases the artist tells his own story through excerpts from informal conversations, taped interviews and his own diaries. Note: the book weighs 2.1 kilos.. First Edition. Hardcover. He is represented in the collections of all the large Australian galleries, and was twice winner of the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes. Sydney : Angus & Robertson, 1992. Octavo, illustrated wrappers (paperback), pp. 204, illustrated, inscription to title page. The 1992 paperback edition of McGrath's 1979 hardcover monograph, rushed into print upon the artist's death, with revisions by McGrath which were the subject of litigation by Wendy and Arkie Whiteley. The Whiteleys claimed breach of copyright for unauthorised use of Brett's images, and were successful in obtaining a court ruling that the edition be recalled and pulped. An inscription in another copy we have sold tells another side of the story: 'Publisher's Proof Copy Aug 1 1992. This book is not for sale and was subject to a court order for pulping. It has been kept by the publisher for the sake of history. The aim of its suppression was to remove Janice Spencer as one of the Whiteley women. Regrettably this was successful. ***** Publisher A&R 1989 - 1993'. This copy is not inscribed as such.  Rare.

Loosely inserted is a sheet of paper inscribed by Brett Whitley and dated 3/3/1989." Brett Whiteley travelled to London in 1960 determined to make an impression. He became the youngest living artist ever to have a work purchased by the Tate Gallery, a record that still stands.
