Vol. 2 only has small early owner's name in ink at top margin of title page. Spines lightly toned, a few tiny nicks at the edges; vol. 2 has shallow loss at head of spine, minor two-inch split at bottom of the back hinge, and faint small dampstain at top edge of the first few leaves, a very good set overall with scattered foxing on the first and final few leaves of each volume. A collection of the British author's contributions to the *Monthly Repository* (there was no equivalent English edition). Martineau was one of the first women to write about society from a woman's point of view, and was a major supporter of abolition, and women's education and rights. She made an extended visit to the U.S. between 1834 and 1837. A handsome set in the original boards.
